South Carolina Advances Hands-Free Driving Legislation

2 mins read

Howdy, neighbors!

In a move reflecting our shared commitment to safety and responsibility, South Carolina is progressing toward implementing a hands-free driving law. After eight years of persistent advocacy, Representative Bill Taylor has successfully advanced legislation aimed at curbing distracted driving on our roads.

Key Points of the Proposed Law:

  • Hands-Free Requirement: Drivers would be prohibited from holding or supporting a mobile device while operating a vehicle. However, the use of Bluetooth, dashboard mounts, or voice commands would remain permissible.
  • Penalties: A first offense would result in a $100 fine, with subsequent violations incurring a $200 fine. During the initial six months after enactment, only warning citations would be issued to allow drivers time to adjust.
  • Safety Concerns: Representative Taylor, who ceased riding his motorcycle due to the dangers posed by distracted drivers, emphasized that individuals using phones while driving are significantly more hazardous than even impaired drivers.
  • Federal Funding Implications: The urgency of this legislation is underscored by the potential loss of up to $50 million in federal highway funds if the state fails to comply with national safety standards.

Community Impact:

This initiative aligns with our values of personal responsibility and the protection of our families and fellow citizens. By reducing distractions on the road, we aim to decrease accidents and fatalities, fostering a safer environment for all.

As the bill moves to the Senate, where it has previously received strong support, we encourage community members to stay informed and engaged. Your voices and actions contribute to shaping a safer South Carolina.

Stay safe and attentive on the roads, y’all.
