South Carolina wins 2022 national championship with win over UConn

1 min read

Sunday, South Carolina defeated UConn 64-49 to win their second national championship.

Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks defeated Geno Auriemma’s Huskies in front of a sellout crowd at Minneapolis’ Target Center in the matchup’s second meeting of the 2021-22 season.

This is South Carolina’s second national title and first since 2017. Staley led the Gamecocks to both championships.

For Geno Auriemma, the Huskies’ this title game defeat marks the first time they have lost a championship game in 12 appearances.

“I do think this is our best team, just the roster from top to bottom, the commitment to their roles,” Staley said. “Then you’ve got to go back last year like no other team have played in back-to-back Final Fours. No other team has been the No. 1 team in the country from beginning to the end and then win the national championship.”

The 2022 Coach of the Year award is a testament to the program Dawn Staley has created. The 2022 squad joins the 2017 team as the eighth program to win multiple national titles.
